Christmas on the beach in Gulf Shores AL

Holiday Hilarity Awaits You This December

Are you wanting to trade sugar-white snow for sugar-white sand this holiday season? If so, look no further than Gulf Shores and Orange Beach!

Throughout the month of December, we have so much merriment happening on our beaches. Below are some of the highlights.

Annual Christmas Lighted Boat Parade Gulf Shores and Orange Beach AL

Kicking off the Christmas calendar is the Gulf Shores Lighted Christmas Parade and Beach Celebration Dec. 6. Featuring festive lighted floats, holiday characters and local marching bands, the parade travels along Highway 59 and ends at Sims Park where festivities continue with a Snowball Drop (4,000 ping pong balls falling from the sky!), pictures with Santa, holiday treats and more.

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind Christmas gift, check out the Annual Merry Market Unique Gifts and Arts & Crafts Expo Dec. 7-8 at Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. There you will find more than 70 vendors with unique gifts, fine arts, crafts, clothing, jewelry, as well as sweet and salty snacks, door prizes and story time with Mrs. Claus.

Then, following the last day of Merry Market, the Coastal Ballet Academy will present everyone’s holiday favorite – The Nutcracker. The production starts at 2 pm at the Erie H. Meyer Civic Center and is directed by Madame Rio Cordy.

If you ask any local, they will tell you not to miss this next December event. On Dec. 10, Gulf Shores will host the Baldwin Pops Band for a Christmas Concert at the Cultural Center. Baldwin Pops is a group of volunteer musicians who share their love of music in a concert band format. The event is free, but they ask that patrons bring a new, unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots.

Christmas at The Wharf in Orange Beach, AL

Another big day on the island this month is Dec. 14. Start the day at Lucy Buffett’s LuLu’s to meet Billy Claus and the LuLuBelles. For those who don’t know, Billy is Santa’s warm weather-loving brother who comes up from the Caribbean every year to help spread the Christmas cheer along with his elves The LuLuBelles. This family-friendly event includes photos with Billy and his crew, arts and crafts, and a reading of Billy Claus and the Spirit of Christmas, written by Lucy Buffett.

Then, stick around for the Annual Christmas Lighted Boat Parade at 5:30pm. Beginning at LuLu’s and finishing at the Flora-Bama, more than 45 decorated vessels will parade down the Intercoastal Waterway. From kayaks and sailboats to huge charter boats, you’ll see it all at one of the most popular events of the season.

And, as we all know, the end of December marks the end of another year. Many of us spend time reflecting on and celebrating the events of the past year; and we invite you all to join us for two special celebrations on Dec. 31: Noon Year’s Eve at LuLu’s and Reelin in the New Year at The Wharf. Noon Year’s Eve is a daytime NYE celebration that includes a beach ball drop, live music, delicious food and fun for all ages. Then, from 5pm to midnight, we will reel in 2020 at The Wharf with live bands, family-friendly and adult fun, a midnight marlin drop, fireworks and more.

Life is never dull in our little slice of paradise down on Alabama’s beaches.
