Sportcation Bucket List
Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Sports Commission
When you think about planning a trip around a sporting event in a beach destination, what comes to mind? Laying on the beach? Playing in the water? Sure, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the perfect place for sinking your toes in the sand and relaxing, but what about checking off some of your bucket list items? Here a few ideas for the daredevils in your group.
Home to one of the largest charter fishing fleets on the Gulf Coast and known as the “red snapper capital of the world,” Orange Beach is popular for its abundant fishing opportunities. Anglers (or want-to-be anglers) will not want to miss a deep-sea fishing adventure with providers like Reel Surprise Charters or Zeke’s Landing Marina to reel in a variety of species. What types of fish might you find? You could reel in all shapes and sizes from black grouper and snapper to marlin and smaller sharks. Your captain and deckhands will know what’s in season and catch and keep limits. Oh, and many of our local restaurants offer “hook and cook,” in which you bring your cleaned fish, and the chef will prepare and pair it with side at a discounted rate.
In spring and summer, beat the heat at Waterville USA with dozens of attractions, including adrenaline-pumping waterslides. Ready to slide almost 60 feet down the Screamin’ Demon or learn to surf on the Flowrider simulator? How about race against your friends on the six-lane Dune Racer? If you’re here when the waterpark and amusement park are not in-season, check out the arcade and the Escape House.
The Wharf is brimming with things to do for your entire group from shopping and dining to concerts and dolphin tours. But, what about that bucket list item? This entertainment district has you covered with the Hummingbird Zipline Course. Zip across the highest and longest (more than 6,000 feet!) course on the Gulf Coast with views of the Intracoastal Waterway, wetlands and Main Street at The Wharf during an exhilarating and educational tour.
Did you know there are nine different ecosystems within Gulf State Park? Yes, NINE. How about experiencing these various landscapes on a Segway tour? Coastal Segway Adventures trains groups and then leads them on a 2-hour tour of the park exploring a portion of the 28-mile trail system showcasing the flora and fauna found within these ecosystems, including maritime forests and dune ridges.
Ever wanted to cuddle with a kangaroo or lark with a lemur? The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo offers up close and personal animal encounters in a safe, controlled and educational environment for the animal lovers in your group. This fun, Instagram-worthy experience is great a great addition to any sportcation, and if you choose to keep your distance from the encounters, there are plenty of other things to see and do at the zoo.
