Why Every Mom Deserves a Mother's Day at the Beach

I remember 27 years ago when I first became a mother, I was young and my newfound role as a mother, added to wife and employee, was overwhelming.

Girlfriends at Gulf Shores Beach

Soon I was a parent of two, then three, then four…and even though I learned the delicate balance of multiple ball practices simultaneously while taking on room mom/team mom challenges and maintaining my role of carpool queen, I still found exhaustion to sometimes get the better of me. I don’t know who looked forward to summer break more . . . me or the kids.

Our summer vacations always led us to the beach. And, even with four kids in tow, the beach offered serenity to me in doses unmatched elsewhere. Something about the sound of the waves, the feel of the sand and basking in the sun’s warmth rejuvenated me in a powerful way. It seemed to do the same for my children who looked forward to beach time for months and always cried when we packed to journey back home. I had raised a pack of beach bunnies!

Through the years, the children got older and occasionally my husband and I would sneak away for a weekend at the beach A L O N E! Sometimes these trips would be in celebration of something (anniversary, birthday, promotion, etc.) and sometimes the trips would be to escape the daily grind. Either way, the gorgeous blue/green waters of Alabama’s Gulf of Mexico juxtaposing sugary-white, sandy shores has always been the perfect antidote for whatever ails me.

May is coming quickly and I know with it comes the question: What do you want for Mother’s Day? A trip to Orange Beach will be my answer . . . an answer my family has heard over and over. What if it’s too cold? What if it rains? My answer has been resounded so many times that my kids will repeat it back to me before I have time to utter it again: “A bad day at the beach is better than a good day anywhere else,” they will recite. And they’ll be correct.

Every mom deserves a Mother’s Day trip to the beach to recharge her spirit, to pamper her body and to recharge her soul. How do you make sure Mom has that perfect day? So glad you asked, because I have tips for you to plan Mom’s weekend in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area and give her what she deserves.

Gulf Shores Spa
  • Mother’s Day is always the second Sunday of May, perfectly sandwiched between spring break and summer vacation season, which means better pricing on a gulfview condo unit that you otherwise might not splurge on. This weekend, splurge on it. For options, check out https://www.gulfshores.com/lodging/.
  • Moms love to be pampered, and what better pampering than a trip to the spa followed by beach time! That’s the ultimate pampering in my opinion. Check out Fusion Spa at The Wharf for an awesome Spa Party Package (facial, massage, pedicure and take-home gift). Also, Beach Club in Fort Morgan has a fabulous
spa (my favorites are the Island Breeze facial and the hot stone massage). You can find out more at on their website.
  • If you choose Fusion Spa at The Wharf, give Mom some time to shop at the unique boutiques and stores…and grab some lunch at Ginny Lane Bar & Grill for a great meal with an amazing view. (My favorites here are the Shrimp N’ Grits, Pan Seared Fish which is the fresh catch, and the Crab Cake.)
  • Speaking of food, treat Mom to a fabulous dinner at Bill’s by the Beach , Cobalt the Restaurant or her personal favorite! If you take on Bill’s, try to go at sunset for a super-special view and food. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, but I am so partial to the pecan-fried catfish and grilled oysters. And at Cobalt, the fresh catch topped off with banana pudding for dessert is fantastic!

Special little extras to consider are things like:

  • Fresh flowers placed in the unit – there is a Publix grocery store close by and they have a nice floral department that’s not too pricy.
  • Her favorite wine chilling in the fridge.
  • A beach bag filled with treats like her favorite snacks, a good book to read on the beach or poolside, a fun T-shirt and new flip flops!

All moms deserve to spend Mother’s Day at the beach. Make it a reality for yours!
