SATURDAY WORKSHOP: Youth

Saturdays in May, August, and September 
Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm
Session 2: 12 – 2 pm 

Ages: 5+

Students ages 5+ are invited to our Saturday Studio Workshops for kids. On select Saturdays, join us in our education classrooms to explore materials, make connections, and create using a wide variety of artistic materials and processes.

Each Saturday offers students aged 5+ opportunities to explore art materials and processes in a variety of 2-hour workshops meant to be accessible for every learner. Each artist will guide participants through the concept to completion, taking home an original artwork inspired by museum collections.

MAY 31 – FOAM RELIEF PRINTS / BEADING WORKSHOP FOR KIDS WITH CHARLOTTE STUTTS |Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm| Session 2: 12 – 2 pm 
Students are invited to the studio with artist Charlotte Stutts to learn beading basics. Students will learn how to create a jewelry piece in this session.

AUGUST 2 – EXPLORE 3D SCULPTURE WITH PLASTER WITH HANNAH EDGE JEWELL | Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm| Session 2: 12 – 2 pm 
Explore creating in 3D with Hannah Edge as she takes students from start to finish in creating their own sculpture using wire, cardboard, and plaster sculpture techniques.

AUGUST 16 – SHADOW BOXES WITH LUCY GAFFORD | Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm
Join Lucy Gafford in designing and crafting your own shadow boxes by transforming layered materials into stunning 3D masterpieces. You will learn how to bring your imaginative ideas to life and create keepsakes to treasure forever. Students are encouraged to bring keepsakes to include in their boxes.

AUGUST 16 – CHARACTER DESIGN WITH BRANDIN STALLWORTH | Session 2: 12 – 2 pm 
Students will explore drawing materials as they study the art of character design with local artist Brandin Stallworth. Learn how to draw and create comics and cartoons. This class will focus on the construction of characters to tell a story. This is a fun and collaborative class where students learn to share and develop their ideas.

AUGUST 30 – COLLAGE FOR KIDS WITH MAGEN PIERCE | Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm
This class will demonstrate how one piece of art can evolve into something new. Students will collectively paint on a large piece of paper using different brushes and sponges to create different textures, lines, and shapes. Then the image will be ripped and the pieces divided evenly among the students – from these pieces they will be asked to collage together their own art piece.

AUGUST 30 – WOODEN ASSEMBLAGE WITH MAGEN PIERCE | Session 2: 12 – 2 pm
This class will encourage an intuitive approach to sculpture through exploration of using natural resources that Mobile Bay has to offer. Students will get to pick from a wide range of different-shaped driftwood. Using different-colored string, the students will learn to collage and construct the driftwood into abstract hanging sculptures.

SEPTEMBER 13 – PORTRAITS FOR KIDS WITH ELSA PEYTON | Session 1: 10 am – 12 pm
Children ages 8+ will learn human facial proportions, value, and color theory by using charcoal transferring techniques to create an acrylic self-portrait.

SEPTEMBER 13 – STUFFED PUPPETS WITH HANNAH JEWELL | Session 2: 12 – 2 pm 
Students will explore felts, fibers, and attachment techniques in creating their own stuffed puppet from start to finish. Students will come up with an idea for their puppet, and be led from sketch to final piece in creating a miniature stuffed puppet.

SEPTEMBER 27 – CERAMIC SOUP BOWLS WITH BRONCO SLOAN | Session 2: 12 – 2 pm
Students ages 5+ will be guided in ceramic hand-building techniques to create a functional bowl.
