Golfing 101

in Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Chris Boothman
September 10, 2024

Whether you are picking up a club for the first time or simply thinking about playing this wonderful game, there is no better place to start than Alabama’s Beaches. With a mild climate, a gorgeous array of greens, and scenic views across the Gulf, this area is perfect for beginners looking to learn the sport.

Why Alabama’s Beaches is a Golfer’s Paradise

The Gulf Coast of Alabama, famous for its 32 miles of white sandy shores and warm southern hospitality, is also home to some of the best golf courses in the state. Here’s why the area is perfect for beginners:

  • Ideal Weather Conditions: The temperate climate allows you to golf year-round. The summer months offer searing hot temperatures but frequently with a breeze from the Gulf, while the winter months are a perfect getaway for “snowbirds” looking to enjoy relaxation under the sun.
  • Beginner-Friendly Courses: Plenty of golf courses are suited for first-timers, with the Orange Beach Golf Center offering a driving range and practice greens to sharpen your skills.
  • Scenic Views: Enjoy breathtaking coastal views, marshlands, and vibrant natural habitats with plenty of wildlife to admire while you learn the game.

Let’s dive into the golfing 101 basics and get you ready to tee off at your chosen Gulf Coast golf course!

Equipment Essentials

Before hitting the course, make sure you have the essential golf equipment. You don’t need to invest in the most expensive gear when you’re just starting out, but having at least a half set of irons and a driver, wedge, and putter is important. Many golf courses in the area offer rental clubs, so you can try them before investing in your own. Be sure to buy affordable golf balls when you start, as you will likely lose a few, which is perfectly normal!

Tees, golf shoes, and a golf glove are other essential items, but while it may be tempting to go out and spend a lot of money on expensive equipment, beginners should focus on the essentials that will help them learn the game without breaking the bank. Having the right equipment is crucial for both comfort and performance.

Understanding the Basics of the Game

For those picking up a club for the first time, golf may seem like an extremely complicated sport. While the concept is simple, the reality can be far from it. Learning the fundamentals can make golf easier to grasp and, with it, much more enjoyable. Mastering your swing is one of the most challenging parts of golf, but if you are willing to keep these basic tips in the back of your mind, you will have a great opportunity to become a great golfer.

Your grip holding the golf club may sound obvious, but holding it correctly with light pressure will ensure you have the necessary mechanics to swing correctly. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and bend slightly at the knees. Your weight should be evenly distributed, and as you swing through, it should transfer to your front foot.

Many local courses offer lessons for beginners, and it’s certainly worthwhile considering visiting a local golf pro to get your swing fundamentals right from the start.

On-Course Golf Etiquette

Before heading to the course for the first time, it’s important to have a good understanding of golfing etiquette so that you will not only enjoy your experience but also abide by local rules and expectations at the course. It all starts with adhering to the local dress code, which can usually be found on the website or by calling the pro shop. Many courses will require a collared shirt, so always check beforehand and wear appropriate attire.

One of the most frustrating aspects of playing golf can be the pace of play, and this frequently leads to people preferring to stay away from the course as they don’t want to contemplate standing around waiting on every shot. Don’t hold up the group behind you, and given that you are a beginner, be prepared to let faster players behind you play through, which will typically be well-received by others on the course.

Kiva Dunes Golf Course

Taking care of the golf course is also critical. Whether you are replacing a divot or filling it with seed and sand, which are usually available in your golf cart, these are good tips to follow. The same is true when you are on the greens to not only repair your own ball mark, but if you see others, feel free to repair them.

Another important tip is to stay quiet when others are playing their shots and be mindful of your surroundings. Don’t stand on your playing partner's line on the green, and be sure to leave your golf cart the designated distance from the putting surface.

Enjoy the Experience

Golf is a game of patience and practice, but it’s also about enjoying the experience both on and off the course. Whether you are contemplating the prospect of hitting that perfect drive down the middle of the fairway, holing a long putt for birdie, or perhaps just preparing to enjoy the 19th hole in the clubhouse, the Gulf Coast’s laid-back vibe, friendly locals, and picturesque landscapes create the perfect environment for beginner golfers.

Remember to have fun, take your time, and embrace the challenges as you improve your skills. “Golf is not a game of perfect” is an infamous quote by one of golf’s iconic psychologists, Dr. Bob Rotella, and it’s certainly a philosophy every new golfer should consider when they first start.
