How to Spend a Weekend on a Couples Getaway on Alabama’s Beaches
Couples often retreat to Alabama’s Gulf Coast for a weekend getaway to relax, unwind and spend quality time together.
It’s a great time to splurge on a luxury resort or a small beach house. Enjoying white-sand beaches is a given, but having an organized plan is the best way to ensure a happy and successful trip.
Kick off the day with a hearty breakfast or brunch at The Ruby Slipper Café. Enjoy a fabulous Southern meal with a New Orleans flair at this award-winning restaurant known for excellent menu options such as Cinnamon Swirl Pancakes, Chicken St. Charles (fried chicken breast over a buttermilk biscuit topped with two poached eggs and finished off with a pork Tasso cream sauce), Catfish & Grits and, of course, some Big Easy Mimosas to wash it all down.
Next, head to The Wharf for a massage at Fusion Spa Salon Orange Beach. Pamper yourselves in the full-service Aveda salon and day spa and leave feeling like a million bucks!
Have lunch at Ginny Lane Bar & Grill while admiring the waterfront view only steps from the spa. Grab a craft brew and a gourmet sandwich or some fresh seafood.
Jump on the Ferris wheel at The Wharf for a bird’s-eye view of Orange Beach and see what familiar sites you can spot from the top.
Head back to your condo or cottage for a soak in the hot tub before freshening up for dinner.
An evening meal accompanied by live music is always a fun idea, so check out local restaurants such as Lucy Buffett’s LuLu’s on the Intracoastal Waterway. From great drinks including Lucy’s famed Crazy Sista Ale to fresh seafood and a Cheeseburger in Paradise, LuLu’s has something for every taste bud.
Bill’s By the Beach offers a great weekend brunch complete with bloody marys and mimosas. It’s the perfect start to any day in Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
Make use of those breakfast calories with a nature walk at Gulf State Park and see the beauty of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. While there, check out the Gulf State Park Nature Center, a living museum of indigenous plants and animals. The goal of the center is to inspire folks to take care of the environment by teaching the connection between nature and resources.
Young and young-at-heart always enjoy the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. With more than 500 animals including sloths, kangaroos and lemurs, there is no shortage of natural entertainment. For an additional fee, enjoy one or more of the available animal encounters.
Another good option for afternoon fun is The Hot Shop, Alabama’s premier glass-blowing facility. Come by to watch artists at work or book a “Make Your Own Glass” class.
Enjoy a lovely dinner at Cobalt the Restaurant, indoors or out. (Even if it’s chilly, there are plenty of outdoor heaters that keep it cozy.) Cobalt offers a well-blended menu bursting with good eats! Start any meal with Cobalt Crab Bisque and follow it up with entrée favorites such as Grilled Gulf Shrimp & Grits, Peppercorn Encrusted Filet, oysters, stone hearth pizzas and more. Save room for a delicious dessert – maybe Banana Pudding or Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee.
After dinner, head on down the road to the Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar, a Gulf Coast landmark noted to be America’s “last great roadhouse.” Enjoy live music and local libations to end the evening.
No matter what you choose to do or where you stay or eat, Alabama’s beautiful beachside communities are perfect for a weekend couples getaway.
