Kick Off Summer With Memorial Day at the Beach
Park your flip flops on Alabama's white-sand beaches for Memorial Day weekend, the official kickoff to the summer season. Nothing says summertime quite like brightly colored umbrellas, sand toys and the clear blue water in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Take advantage of a long holiday weekend for fun in the sun and say hello to summertime on Alabama's beaches!
How will you spend your time on Alabama's shore during this annual beach pilgrimage? We have a few ideas for you.
• Try something new! Strap on a flyboard and soar in the air above Wolf Bay or the Gulf of Mexico. This action watersport is perfect for adventure-seekers. A flyboard is a foot-mounted board connected to a personal watercraft via a 60-foot hose. The output that usually propels the vessel is redirected to two jets at the bottom of the flyboard, creating lift.
• Get a new perspective of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Take to the air on an Orange Beach helicopter tour and spy dolphins and historic landmarks. Get a hands-on experience with a beach flight tour on a P&M Aviation aircraft. After an introduction to the aircraft, you'll have the opportunity to fly the trike with an FAA-certified instructor.
• Pay homage to past military heroes with a tour of historic Fort Morgan. Explore the grounds where naval battles were fought during several wars, from 1834 to World War II. Browse the onsite museum for an up-close look at military artifacts.
Of course, no Memorial Day weekend would be complete without plenty of time playing and relaxing in the sand and surf. Be sure to brush up on the Beach Warning Flag system prior to your trip, and to educate your family as well.
