How Exploring Beach Nature Changed My Vacation Experience

When you think of a vacation on the beach, you often think of fine, sugar-white sand and stunning views. The Alabama beaches have all this, alongside one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

The Alabama Coastal Connection is part of America's Scenic Highway and Byway system. When you explore the beaches along the Alabama coastline, you will also experience history and nature that you simply cannot find anywhere else.

Are you a fan of birds? I have recently taken a liking to bird watching. The Alabama Gulf Coast boasts hundreds of species of birds, as well as other forms of flora and fauna waiting to pull you in. One minute you may be strolling along the beach itself and next thing you know, you are in a forest of rolling pine-oak woodlands.

The sights and sounds here are amazing. On a recent Gulf Shores vacation, I literally put everything in silent mode during a stop at the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Quiet was quickly overtaken by the beautiful sound of birds chirping. The refuge is a migratory stop for many bird populations traveling between their breeding grounds and wintering grounds. They seemed to be having a conversation as I listened. Nature is alive along the Alabama coastline and it's a beautiful way to spend a portion of your beach vacation. I had taken a step back in time and it's a moment that will stick with me for a long time. How often do you experience quiet while on a vacation?

If you do take a stroll on any of the four trails that make up the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge Trail, I would suggest taking a bottle of water and bug spray. Another tip is to dress in layers. As you venture closer to the water, the temperature often cools a little.  Depending on the season, you may be smart to wear a swimsuit under your clothes. Your experience will be a good one and you will want to return when you plan your beach and nature vacation along the Alabama coastline. Don't be surprised if you see a bird or two on the beach. You may even see an endangered sea turtle laying its eggs or a nest hatching! Take a step back and observe. You will be grateful that you did.
