Tournament season hits the Gulf Coast

May marks the start of the fishing tournament season in Orange Beach.

Have you ever attended a marlin tournament at The Wharf in Orange Beach? Big boats, big fish and big prize money attract anglers and well-wishers to watch the action. The thrill of watching the weigh-in of fish weighing more than 600 pounds is something you’re not likely to forget.

What's the catch?

The Wharf Bill Fish Classic

This year, the Orange Beach Billfish Classic is May 17-21 at The Wharf Marina. The participating teams are serious about getting big fish and winning big money! You will definitely want to be near the scales when the boats start coming in. The blue marlin winner for the 2016 Orange Beach Billfish Classic weighed a hefty 651.2 pounds. What do you think this year’s winner will bring in?

July takes us to the granddaddy of the Orange Beach marlin tournaments, the 2017 Blue Marlin Grand Championship of the Gulf. “The Greatest Show in Sportsfishing” is set for July 11-17 at The Wharf Marina in Orange Beach. Last year’s blue marlin winner was a whopping 806.8 pounds. Will someone beat that this year?

Orange Beach Boat Show

You don’t have to have a big boat, or a boat at all, to participate in the “Funnest Fishing Tournament on the Gulf Coast.” The Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo is billed as the “every man’s” tournament. Categories range from catfish to billfish and everything between for the three-day event that starts June 2. In true Flora-Bama style, a three-day beach party and awards ceremony accompanies the tournament. It includes daily weigh-ins with a fish-viewing area, and live music. This is a kid-friendly event with a youth division for ages 12 and under.

Fish or observe. Either way, there’s great excitement waiting for you along the Alabama Coast!
