During your visit we want you and your group to enjoy yourselves while staying healthy, safe and, of course, happy. Check out the links below to learn about water safety, beach flag meanings and how to stay hydrated during the summer months.
Water Safety and Beach Flag Meanings
Dip your toes in the Gulf of Mexico and relax to the sound of the waves. Our waters are cool and refreshing, but it’s important to realize you must stay smart in the water and avoid dangerous situations from wildlife, rip currents and other water hazards.
Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer a helpful Beach Warning Flag System with color-coded flags to let you know about current water conditions. Each city also offers a hotline to call if you don’t see a flag where you are staying:
For current conditions in Gulf Shores, dial 251-968-TIDE (8433).
For current conditions in Orange Beach, dial 251-981-SURF (7873).
We have outlined the flag colors and their meanings here:
- Yellow Flag: Medium hazard with moderate surf conditions.
- Purple Flag: Dangerous marine life is present.
- Red Flag: High hazard with high surf and strong currents.
- Double Red Flag: Water closed to the public. Please be aware when a double red flag is flying water conditions are not safe for swimming. We suggest enjoying the sand or pool.
Download a brochure of beach safety tips before you leave home or immediately upon arriving at your coastal home.
Stay Hydrated and Cool
The summer months can mean high heat. On days when the double red flag is flying, and the waters are closed, there are plenty of other “cool” options and fun activities for your group. Check out the Wave Pool at Waterville USA, or grab lunch at The Wharf in Orange Beach, a premier Entertainment District.
