Fling a Fish at Annual Flora-Bama Mullet Toss

The fish will be flying when the annual Interstate Mullet Toss and Gulf Coast’s Greatest Beach Party gets down to business April 24 through April 26 at the Flora-Bama Lounge & Oyster Bar.

Mullet Toss Orange Beach

The big event is located on the state line between Alabama and Florida. It’s one of the big beach parties each year on the Alabama Gulf Coast and it’s destined to be a weekend of sun, fun and fish flinging.

A mullet toss consists of people throwing a mullet from a 10-foot circle in Florida across the state line into Alabama. Each mullet tossed nets a donation to local youth charities, as well as prevention programs by the Community Drug & Alcohol Council, Inc. The annual event raises more than $20,000. While some may only know of the mullet hairstyle, it’s actually a bait fish along the East Coast and a local delicacy on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

The fun starts at noon on Friday, April 24, and at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26. Celebrity tossers will be at the Flora-Bama at noon on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The tossed mullet doesn’t go to waste; it is fed to the birds at the conclusion of the weekend’s activities.

The $15 fee to toss a mullet and enter the competition is separate from the cover charge for the Flora-Bama. There are prizes in each category for first, second and third places, and six finalists are chosen in the men’s and women’s division each day. Parking is limited; the $10 fee to park will be split between local charities. You can also ride the Flora-Bama Bus for a $5 – catch it at Publix in Orange Beach beginning at 9 a.m. Your best arrangement may be to book an Orange Beach condo within walking distance of Flora-Bama.
