A Beach Vacation for All Seasons

Gulf Shores & Orange Beach

Do you only associate the beach with summertime vacations? We’ve got some news for you: You’re really missing out! The Alabama Gulf Coast’s winter beaches are a prime spot for getting away from it all. In fact, you can enjoy beach activities year round in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

Are you wondering how we winter in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach? We certainly don’t stay inside, bundled up. Much of our winter season boasts mild temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s, so the weather is still comfortable for all sorts of activities. For us and our visitors, wintertime is about community chili cook-offs, exploring nature and taking advantage of those indoor pools that were abandoned in the hot summer months. You can even still catch a football game in the winter on the Alabama Gulf Coast!

You’ll want to kick off winter with a dip in the Gulf. Yes, you read correctly. Every year on Jan. 1, hundreds of locals and visitors take the plunge during the Flora-Bama Polar Bear Dip. Follow up your dip with a feast of black-eyed peas, cornbread and ham, and you’ve started your year off right.

Fort Morgan Flag poles

We love the outdoors, no matter what time of year it is. Take in the historical sites at Fort Morgan for a Tuesday Winter Civil War tour, happening every Tuesday in January. A historian will share details of the area’s rich Civil War history as you walk through and around the fort.

To warm your bones, grab a bowl of chili at the 2017 Flora-Bama Annual Super Chili Bowl Cook-Off on Feb. 4. If you have a great chili recipe, why not enter it and top off your winter vacation with a win? Still hungry? Those visiting in February need to stop in at the 11th Annual Low Country Boil on Feb. 17. Tickets should be pre-purchased, and the price also includes admission to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.
