Plenty of Fun in the Sun for the Holiday Weekend
A little seagull told us your bags are packed, and you're heading to Gulf Shores & Orange Beach for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. There's nothing like a little fun in the sun to kick start your summer season! If you're looking for a few things
to do while you're vacationing on the sugar-white sands of the Gulf Coast, here are some things to add to your itinerary.
You won't want to miss the 2012 LuluPalooza held at Lulu's at Homeport Marina. The free-concert event is fun for all ages and will feature more than five live bands including The Lee Boys, Honey Island Swamp Band, Eric Lindell, Dread Clampitt and Roddie Romero and the Hub City All Stars. Music starts at 4 p.m. on May 26 and 27, but we suggest you arrive a few hours early to enjoy some of Lucy Buffett's LA Caviar or a Cheeseburger in Paradise.
On Monday, May 28 take a ride out to Historic Fort Morgan on Highway 180. From 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., uniformed living history interpreters will honor the nation's military with artillery salutes throughout the day. The fort, also known as the “Guardian of Mobile Bay,” was active during four wars – the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. Admission is $5 for seniors, $7 for adults and $4 for children 6 to 12.
Besides scheduled events, a great way to spend the holiday weekend is at the Gulf State Park's Lake Shelby. Watermelon is a Memorial Day must, so be sure to bring one to enjoy with your picnic lunch by the lake. The roped-off swimming area is perfect for little ones, and a boat launch is also located on the premises. Admission to Lake Shelby is $1 per person. The boat launch fee is $2.
Whether you choose scheduled events or if winging it is your style, we look forward to seeing you soon on the Gulf Coast!
