Never Have I Ever: Enjoyed SO MUCH Fresh Seafood until Visiting Gulf Shores & Orange Beach
What’s the recipe for a top travel destination?
What makes a place one you want to visit for the first time and then keep coming back? Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is one of my top picks for a family beach vacation. White-sand beaches, southern hospitality, a range of accommodations, year-round activities, and an amazing local food scene draw people here and keep them coming back again and again. It’s a recipe that keeps me coming back, too.
Above all else, fresh Gulf seafood is something I can’t get enough of. It doesn’t get any fresher unless you catch it yourself, which is always an option. Local restaurants are serving it up steamed, boiled, fried, blackened, baked, grilled, or sushi/sashimi style.
It’s no secret that I love to eat! It goes beyond simple sustenance. When planning a vacation, I start with two questions. Where will I go? What local foods and restaurants must I try? My trips to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have been filled with some fantastic Gulf to Table restaurants serving Gulf seafood and a growing number of reasons to keep coming back. The Gulf Shores Food Trails have me adding new places to my bucket list to try the next time I’m in town.
If you love seafood, here are three of my local favorites:
This waterfront restaurant was my first taste of Alabama Gulf Coast food. I was hooked at first bite. Working with regional farmers and local fisherman, the menu here changes daily to provide the freshest food possible. You can never go wrong with the Fresh Catch of the Day. On my first visit, I enjoyed a fried grouper sandwich on a brioche bun with house-made lemon dill sauce. Amazing!
Big Wave Dave’s Beach Bar & Kitchen
This is one of the area’s newer restaurants (late 2017) and was awarded the Open Table Diner’s Choice Award in 2018. Here you can have the best of the Atlantic and the Gulf. The menu includes Gulf shrimp po’boys and tacos, a daily catch and lobster rolls with Maine lobster.
Fisher’s at Orange Beach Marina
Two restaurants in one – Dockside is the casual restaurant downstairs. Upstairs you’ll find upscale dining. The James Beard nominated chef offers everything from Gulf shrimp and grits and roasted oysters at Dockside to red snapper and jumbo scallops Upstairs. It is also named one of the best seafood restaurants on the Gulf Coast by Coastal Living magazine.
