Fishing on Alabama’s Beaches is Only for the Guys

Fishing on Alabama’s Beaches is Only for the Guys

Reality: The sport isn’t the old boys' club you may think it is. More than one in three people who fish are women. I’m one of them and enjoyed my first charter fishing trip off the shores of Orange Beach.

There are so many places to go fishing on Alabama’s Beaches. You can cast your line inland, from the beach, off the pier or head out on the Gulf. If you are new to saltwater fishing, the Gulf State Park's Angler Academy is the perfect way to get started. This experience takes you out onto the Gulf State Park Pier (one of the longest piers on the Gulf Coast at over 1,540 feet) to learn about gear, casting, fishing rules, and more.

My first Orange Beach fishing trip was with an all-female group that spent half the day catching red snapper, mahi-mahi, and amberjack. I remember that day well, as the water was completely calm, the sun was shining, and we were reeling in fish as soon as the hook hit the water. It was relaxing and exhilarating all at the same time.

When you book a fishing charter trip, the captain provides your fishing license, bait, and gear. They also know where the best places to fish are and take you out to them, so all you have to do is show up ready to catch a fresh dinner!

Fishing is a year-round activity on Alabama’s Beaches with desirable species available throughout each fishing season on the Gulf, so you can hook a catch no matter when you visit!

From Easter to Thanksgiving, the Gulf waters are perfect for water recreation, and land temperatures are still comfortable, too. Gulf water temperatures typically stay in the low-to-mid 70s°F through October, which is warm enough for swimming well past Labor Day. Spring, fall, and winter months are wonderful times to visit. There are fewer crowd sand lower lodging rates. During the winter months, visitors enjoy temperatures in the mid-60s˚.

Visiting during the shoulder seasons allows visitors to enjoy an affordable beach vacation as lodging rates are typically 20-40% lower than peak summer weeks.

These off-seasons also bring an array of incredible family-friendly festivals and events in spring, fall, and winter. From fishing tournaments and car shows to food and arts festivals and holiday festivities, there’s always something exciting happening on Alabama’s Beaches.
