Snowbird Activities
In Gulf Shores & Orange Beach
Snowbirds make up a large part of the beach population in winter months, when folks seek refuge from cold temperatures in the country's northern regions. There's plenty here to keep you as busy as you'd like, and our beachside cities welcome you to enjoy sun, sand, and a sense of community.

1. Get Connected
Stay connected by joining a snowbird group. You'll find quite a few official snowbird state groups, many offering outings and functions to help you stay active and socialize during your time in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. For example, New York snowbirds meet for lunch on certain dates, and the Michigan Snowbird Club holds meetings that include entertainment, coffee and donuts, announcements of club activities, and door prizes.

2. Discover Local Events
Most snowbirds are up for something other than relaxing and lazy days (although those are totally acceptable as well). Thankfully, plenty of events occur along the Alabama Gulf Coast to keep folks as busy as they want to be. From festivals and live music to food events and holiday celebrations, there's always something fun happening on Alabama's beaches. Check out all the upcoming events in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.

3. Get Outdoors
The cooler temperatures of winter make this time of year ideal for exploring the Alabama Gulf Coast, and our area offers many ways to experience the outdoors. Walk or bike the paved trails in Gulf State Park, cast a line, search for shells, or discover the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. Learn about the unique plant and wildlife of Alabama's beaches with a guided walk from the naturalists at Gulf State Park.

4. Immerse Yourself in History
History buffs will love visiting our shores and discovering the rich history of Alabama's beaches. Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have their own museums detailing the culture and origins of each town. Our area played a significant role during the Civil War and is home to Historic Fort Morgan, a third-system masonry fort built in the 1800s. You can also travel to neighboring cities Mobile and Pensacola to learn more about the Gulf Coast's history.

5. Let the Good Times Roll
January kicks off the Mardi Gras season here in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, and we let the good times roll – beach style. You'll have plenty of opportunities to catch beads at the dozens of parades along the Alabama Gulf Coast. Come prepared and follow our top Mardi Gras tips for a great time! Many local restaurants and bars celebrate with Mardi Gras-inspired eats and drinks. Don't forget to pick up a king cake while you're here!

6. Dine Out
Take advantage of the less crowded season by dining at the fabulous restaurants along our shores. Winter is a great time to eat out, as most places have short or no wait times. In addition to delicious coastal cuisine, you'll find that many spots offer snowbird and happy hour deals. Check with your favorite restaurant to see if they have any specials.

7. Play a Round of Golf
Like the restaurants, the golf courses along the Alabama Gulf Coast see fewer visitors during wintertime. This is ideal for golfers looking to get in a few rounds before spring. Our area is home to 15 magnificent courses, each with its own amenities and scenic views. Many clubs and courses offer discounts during this slower season, so call ahead and ask before booking a tee time to golf any time of year!

8. Attend Our Showcase Series
Snowbirds can enjoy the winter showcase series at The Learning Campus at Gulf State Park during January and February. These free presentations begin at 10:30 am and last approximately one hour. Topics include nature, cooking, history, local culture, and more, and several presentations include demonstrations. Be on the lookout for 2024 dates and subjects coming soon!
